How Spray Foam Insulation Works
Spray foam insulation is a two-in-one product, insulating and air sealing in one step. Unlike fiberglass insulation, spray foam insulation expands when applied and completely fills a cavity to prevent air leakage and keep your energy bills low.
Spray foam wall insulation can also increase the strength of your home, helping to increase stability during high winds and severe storms.
Open and Closed Cell Spray Foams
Our professional team at LONE STAR INSULATION use one of two types of spray foam when insulating a home: Open Cell or Closed Cell spray foam insulation.
Open cell spray foam is less dense, as the cells in the foam are “open.” Closed cell spray foam is denser as the cells in the foam are closed, creating more stability. Read on for more details about these two spray foam options.
Open cell spray foam
has a density of 0.5 pounds per cubic foot. It is made up of cells of foam that are not completely closed. The cells are broken, and air fills all of the “open” space inside of the material. Open cell spray foam insulation has an R-value of 3.4 to 4.5 per inch.
Closed cell spray foam
has a density of 2.0 pounds per cubic foot. The cells are closed and packed tightly together. They are filled with gas that helps the foam rise and expand. Closed cell foam is very dense and therefore has greater insulating properties. Closed cell spray foam insulation has an R-value of 5.4 to 7.2 per inch.
